Low quality when converting .dwg to .pdf

You'd need to view it at the same size as the original to get the same quality. The issue is the size of the viewer/screen display, not the output of the PDF being changed to lower quality. To put it bluntly, 72 dpi is not good enough quality if the PDF is to be opened full size on a large high resolution computer monitor. Here is another example of converting a PDF to a high-resolution JPEG file: Remember that the lower in quality you go, the more lossy the image, and smaller the resulting file size. The progressive option above specifies how pixels get loaded. Here is a simple demo that illustrates this.

Founded by Alex Savsunenko and Vladislav Pranskevičius—a chemistry Ph.D. and a former CTO This has been confusing me, but I think a higher density results in output with lower resolution. That means that if the output is fuzzy (over-aliased, like the example in the original question) then lower density is what you want. But if a PDF is pixelated then indeed you need to convert with a higher density. – Brian Z Apr 22 '15 at 7:32

The lower the resolution, the lower the quality of the print. The required resolution for optimum quality photographic print is 250ppi to 300ppi. Image resolution lower than this will reduce the quality of the print. Resolution between 150ppi and 250ppi is acceptable however some loss of image sharpness and small pixel may occur.
